In an effort to provide an equal level of service throughout the City, the City is broken down into ten street plowing routes, five cul-de-sac routes, and one sidewalk route. Each route is approximately the same size or takes approximately the same amount of time to plow.
Each driver is encouraged to make an effort to see that his route gets flip flopped or changed enough each time so that the last street plowed one time is not plowed last the following time. It should be understood that this is not always possible.
In most cases plowing will not start until the snow has stopped falling. The City has an adequate plowing crew to plow the City in a reasonable amount of time, but does not have back-up crews to re-plow.
In most cases the Public Works Department will have all streets plowed in an eight hour period. Plowing very often will start at 4:00 AM with most streets being clear by noon. The routes are then gone back through for additional sanding. Major snow events over six inches can take considerably longer.
In the event of equipment breakdown on any route, that route is finished when other routes are complete and as equipment from those routes becomes available.
Skating rinks are a second priority and, in most cases, will be cleared the day following the snow event--after the streets are cleared.
